The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is finally over, and for many students, it feels like the start of a much-deserved break. After years of hard work, discipline, and preparation for this significant milestone, children across Singapore are enjoying their newfound freedom. But while the PSLE results—expected between November 20 and 22—remain on the horizon, this is also a valuable time to start thinking about next steps. As parents, we can help our children balance their time between rest and planning for the next phase of their school journey. Here are a few considerations as you guide your child forward:

Now that there’s time after the PSLE, encourage your child to think about their unique abilities, interests, and values. This self-discovery is invaluable as it helps them identify the subjects and activities they are enthusiastic and excel in. Engage your child in meaningful discussions about their interests and what activities allow their creativity to shine. These discussions are an excellent opportunity to help them discover their sense of purpose and consider what drives them as they transition to secondary school. Remember, this self-discovery is but one of the many next steps that will not only benefit them now but also in their future.

As the time for the  Secondary 1 Posting exercise draws near, it’s an opportunity to research potential school choices and academic pathways available. Look for schools that resonate with your child’s unique goals and interests. The new Subject-Based Banding (SBB) system, which replaces streaming, presents students with diverse opportunities to delve into areas that align with their individual abilities rather than being limited to a predetermined set of subjects.

Engaging in open and honest conversations with your child about their preferences while sharing your own perspectives provides a valuable opportunity to make decisions together and strengthen your parent-child relationship through meaningful discussions.

After exploring various school alternatives and subjects with your child, it is important to reinforce the idea that you are a team. Together, you can develop a strategy for what they want to achieve. Encourage your child to think about the skills they will need for success in the future, such as communication, problem-solving, and collaboration, and discuss how they can start honing these skills as one of their next steps after the PSLE.

Staying informed about the constantly evolving educational landscape will help you to reassure yourself and guide your child effectively. This knowledge will empower you to make informed decisions as you prepare for the next phase of your child’s academic journey.

As you eagerly anticipate the release of the PSLE results, use this opportunity to strengthen family connections. This is an ideal moment to engage in meaningful conversations with your child, exploring their aspirations and sharing your own insights. These conversations will help instil confidence in both of you as you prepare for the next steps ahead. Your engagement will make a difference.
